Seattle Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Brent Jones has announced his departure, scheduled for September 3. This decision follows closely on the heels of a contract extension he had accepted just last month. During his tenure that began in May 2021, Dr. Jones is credited with achieving significant milestones in the district's education system.
Under his leadership, Seattle Public Schools surpassed its five-year targets for student graduation rates, according to KIRO 7. Dr. Jones also spearheaded numerous initiatives aimed at bridging opportunity gaps by providing equitable access to quality education and fostering a school environment that prioritizes student well-being. These concerted efforts included enhancing mental health resources and expanding counseling services available to students.
In a statement obtained by KIRO 7, SPS Board President Gina Topp expressed deep gratitude towards Dr. Jones, citing his "steady and compassionate leadership" and unwavering dedication to the students of Seattle. In her words, "His focus on uplifting students—whether by expanding academic supports, strengthening mental health resources, or ensuring every child has access to the opportunities they deserve—has made a meaningful difference in our schools."
As for the transition, Dr. Jones has committed himself to aiding the search for his successor and to work with the legislature on acquiring funds for the district. His focus also remains set on delivering a balanced budget for the upcoming year and kickstarting the 2025-26 school year, as Dr. Jones stated to KOMO News. "It has been an honor to serve as superintendent of Seattle Public Schools and to give back to the community that shaped me," he said. "I am incredibly proud of the progress we have made together, and I remain committed to supporting our students, educators, and families during this transition."
