A tragic incident at a suburban Chicago nightclub over the weekend has left a young woman dead, and a security guard is now in custody. The altercation occurred at Mansion Live nightclub in Stone Park early Saturday morning, claimed the life of 21-year-old Zulma Daniela Calderon, and has since cast a somber mood over the community.
According to NBC Chicago, a fight broke out at around 1:38 a.m., during which a security guard discharged a firearm amidst the chaos. Unfortunately, the shot struck Calderon, who was later pronounced dead by the Cook County Coroner. The aftermath of the incident was captured on cell phone video, which shows a panicked crowd rushing to the exits after the shot was fired. In a statement obtained by CBS News Chicago, Calderon's boyfriend, Joel Chimborazo, recounted the harrowing moment, stating, "When he was about to shoot, he got hit and just made him shoot wherever, and I don't know how the bullet went past me and just hit my girlfriend."
The Stone Park police have taken the security guard into custody, and coordination is ongoing between them and the Cook County State’s Attorney regarding potential charges. Meanwhile, the West Suburban Major Crimes Task Force is leading the investigation to uncover further details. The identity of the security guard has not been released, and it is unclear whether they were employed by a private company or were part of a police department.
Calderon, who hailed from Chicago's Little Village neighborhood, was remembered by her loved ones as caring and giving. "Even on Christmas, she spent all her checks buying Christmas gifts for the kids," her mother, Elizabeth Uriza, told CBS News Chicago. The family is now preparing for a farewell they never anticipated, seeking donations to help with funeral expenses, as Chimborazo reflects on the loss of constant communication with Calderon over their five-year relationship. "Even if we sue or get money from it, she's not going to come back," he lamented.
