U.S. Senator Ron Wyden, D-Ore., along with U.S. Representatives Kathy Castor, D-Fla., and Paul Tonko, D-N.Y., is pushing to revoke several executive orders on energy issued by former President Donald Trump. According to a release from Wyden's Office, this effort aims to protect American jobs, reduce rising energy costs for families, and continue investing in clean energy to keep pace with China's energy advancements.

According to the release, Wyden’s new bill, called the Defending American Jobs and Affordable Energy Act, seeks to reverse the "Unleashing American Energy" executive order, the National Energy Emergency declaration, the withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement, and the pause on new offshore wind leases. This comes at a time when America's clean energy sector is at risk, and Wyden argues that rural communities are likely to be the most affected by Trump's executive orders. Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee Ranking Member Martin Heinrich, D-N.M., and Senate Environment and Public Works Committee Ranking Member Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., support the legislation.

Senator Wyden criticized the previous administration’s energy policies, stating, "Since day-one, Trump has been laser focused on giving handouts to the oil and gas industry at the expense of American jobs," and warned that Trump's actions could harm clean energy production. Crippling clean energy production at home will only lead to clean energy manufacturing packing up and moving to China Wyden mentioned in the Wyden's Office release.

Representative Castor stressed the economic and environmental consequences, stating that President Trump's energy policies would increase electric bills, raise costs for families, and give China an advantage in developing clean energy solutions. Representative Tonko pointed out the gap between Trump’s promises and the actual results, noting that while Trump claimed his actions would lower energy costs, energy prices have instead risen.

Wyden’s push for affordable energy and grid electrification is part of the Clean Energy For America Act, which was included in the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act. This act aims to reduce carbon emissions and lower energy costs, laying the groundwork for the current legislative effort. The bill has support from prominent Senate figures, including Minority Whip Dick Durbin, D-Ill., and Senators Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., and Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass.
