Residents in parts of Sonoma and Napa counties are slated to receive a test alert on their phones come March 27, courtesy of a joint operation between the counties and local emergency services. The exercise, confirmed by Sonoma County's announcement, aims to assess the efficacy of the Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) system specifically for the evacuation zone SON-6F4, straddling the county line.

From 10:45 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., officials plan to distribute a barrage of test messages to the roughly 400 residents within this zone. It's not uncommon for some to receive multiple alerts during this window. To know if you're in the targeted test area, Sonoma County recommends using the Know Your Zone tool or dialing 2-1-1 for assistance.

The WEA works similarly to the more familiar Amber Alert system, pushing a message to cell phones within an affected area during emergencies. This test, not an evacuation exercise, reminds you to ensure your phone's sound is on. Entering airplane mode or enabling "do not disturb" can affect your ability to receive these alerts. Remember, WEA is a national service that doesn't require sign-up to be effective.
