Commuters be aware: The Arizona Department of Transportation has announced a significant closure that will affect drivers in the Southeast Valley. The westbound Loop 202 on-ramp at Val Vista Drive is set to shut down starting 10 p.m. this Friday, March 14, and the closure is expected to last for around two months. According to ADOT, the closure is necessary for the reconstruction of the ramp, a key part of the Loop 202 widening project that covers Chandler and Gilbert.
ADOT recommends that drivers pivot to the nearby westbound Loop 202 on-ramps at both Santan Village Parkway and Lindsay Road while the mainstay entrance at Val Vista Drive remains off limits. These detours will play a crucial role in maintaining traffic flow in the region during these infrastructure upgrades.
The Loop 202 Improvement Project, which comes with a hefty $200 million price tag, aims to add lanes and interchange enhancements along an 8-mile stretch of the freeway between Loop 101 (Price Freeway) and Val Vista Drive. In a recent broadcast, which was spotlighted on the On the Road with ADOT podcast, listeners got an earful about the forthcoming changes. Those intrigued can tune in for more details at azdot.gov/podcast or on popular platforms such as Apple Podcasts and Spotify.
Financial backing for the Loop 202 effort is sourced, in part, from Proposition 400, the dedicated half-cent sales tax that was greenlit by Maricopa County voters back in 2004. This project falls under the broader Regional Transportation Plan overseen by the Maricopa Association of Governments, the planning authority spearheading transportation strategies for the sprawling Greater Phoenix region.
