The Seattle Police Department is conducting an investigation following an incident where an SPD officer fatally shot an individual outside of the Southwest Precinct building. According to SPD's official blotter, the shooting occurred yesterday at approximately 12:18 p.m.
Reports indicate that patrol officers encountered a male suspect armed with a knife within the gated police parking lot. Officers reportedly attempted to de-escalate the situation using various techniques, including a less-lethal device, but were unable to successfully resolve the encounter non-lethally. In the unfolding moments, an SPD officer felt compelled to quickly discharge his firearm, striking the man. Police provided immediate medical aid to the individual on the scene.
The Seattle Fire Department arrived shortly after and continued with medical treatment. The man was pronounced dead at the scene by SFD personnel. The identity of the deceased has not been released pending next of kin notifications.
The SPD's Force Investigation Team will lead the probe into the officer's use of force during the incident. The Seattle Police Department has protocols in place that ensure transparency in such incidents, including the release of video evidence within a 72-hour window following the event. Both the Office of Police Accountability and the Office of Inspector General were present at the scene and will to also carefully scrutinize the officer's actions.
