In a bid to enhance fire safety for the elderly and those physically unable to secure their own homes, the City of St. Louis Park's Fire Department, in collaboration with the American Red Cross, has launched the "Smoke Alarms for Seniors" program. This community-centric initiative offers a potential lifeline to seniors living in their own homes or condos by providing them with 10-year sealed battery-operated smoke alarms at no cost, according to a recent social media post from the city.
Elderly residents of St. Louis Park can arrange an appointment for the installation of these smoke alarms by reaching out to a fire prevention specialist at Fire Station 1. The number to call is 952-924-2595, and the service includes not only the installation of the smoke alarm but also a discussion on fire safety. As noted by the city, hardwired smoke detectors, however, are not included in this service.
Residents have quickly taken to the program, recognizing its potential to prevent tragic fire-related incidents that disproportionately impact seniors.
