In a commendable act of environmental stewardship, two St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office deputies saved a great blue heron entwined in an abandoned trout line. The deputies, identified as Nico Paternostro and John Hrabley, were on patrol in the West Pearl area when they made the discovery, according to the department's social media post. With a combination of adept boating and timely intervention, the duo managed to untangle the distressed bird.
The Sheriff's Office shared, "With Nico’s elite boat handling skills (think Top Gun: River Edition) and John’s quick hands, our dynamic duo swooped in for the rescue." Despite the serious nature of the situation, the post included a light-hearted touch, suggesting the heron gave a nod of appreciation before returning to the sky.
The Sheriff's Office used the rescue story to send a clear message about the responsibility all outdoor enthusiasts have to maintain the cleanliness of their natural recreation areas. "Abandoned lines don’t just tangle birds, they create unnecessary drama. Pick up after yourselves, folks!" their post cautioned.
