Yesterday evening, a blaze erupted in a one-story commercial building at 100 Maple Street in Stoneham currently under renovation. The fire, which was reported to have started around 9:42 p.m., was met with a swift emergency response from firefighter crews from multiple towns, as detailed by Boston 25 News.
Upon activation of fire alarms within the premises, local firefighters, supplemented by additional departments, brought in hose lines to tackle the fire. The building's sprinkler system engaged, assisting in quick containment of the fire. Notably, the sprinklers later contributed to water damage. "Our crews were quickly on the scene, thanks to the alarm system working properly, and were able to contain the fire," Stoneham Fire Chief Matthew Grafton said, in a statement obtained by The Boston Globe.
Contributing to the emergency efforts were firefighters from not only Stoneham but also Winchester, with additional support from Wakefield and Reading crews who covered the Stoneham stations during the incident. The coordinated response across town lines underscores the established protocols for mutual aid that exist amongst communities in times of crisis.
Fortunately, there were no injuries reported as a result of the incident, though the water discharged from the sprinklers resulted in secondary damage to the facility. The cause of the fire is still being investigated, and more information will be shared as the situation develops. For ongoing updates, residents and interested individuals are encouraged to closely watch local reports.
