Andrea C. Correa, a 37-year-old woman from Sunrise, Florida, has been charged in connection with a fraudulent scheme involving unauthorized asylum applications. According to a press release from the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Florida, Correa is accused of falsifying immigration documents.
The indictment claims that Correa prepared and submitted at least one asylum application to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) that included false claims of political persecution, despite the client admitting they had not experienced such persecution. Since 2013, Correa is reported to have submitted over a thousand similar applications. If convicted, she faces up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
The U.S. Attorney's Office emphasized that an indictment is not a determination of guilt, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty. The case is under investigation by HSI West Palm Beach and the USCIS Fraud Detection and National Security Directorate Miami Asylum Office, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Katie Sadlo handling the prosecution.
