Casa Grande's Jewish community is grappling with the aftermath of a suspected arson attack that left the Khal Chasidim Jewish Community Center severely damaged. On Monday, FOX 10 Phoenix reported that the center, which also housed the Kosher Palace grocery store, became engulfed in flames. Authorities arrived at the scene near Peart and Kortsen roads to find severe damage. Everardo Gregorio, a 30-year-old with a history of arrests, was identified by surveillance footage and subsequently taken into custody.
According to ABC15, investigating officers linked Gregorio to the incident after spotting a man closely resembling him, wearing the same style of sandals as seen in the video, near the center when they detained him two days post the incident. Despite being recognized by his footwear, Gregorio maintained his innocence, claiming he was sleeping when the fire took place.
In the community, concern has been elevated due to this event mark the second religious building fire in Casa Grande in recent months. Last October, St. Anthony of Padua church endured a similar fate. As mentioned by FOX 10 Phoenix, there have been murmurs of a connection between the two fires, although the police have currently found no evidence to corroborate such a link.
The implications for Gregorio are serious, as he's been charged with felony arson of an occupied structure. "It's sad to see what seems like a targeted attack," a community member lamented, echoing sentiments heard in an increasing frequency across various locales. FOX 10 Phoenix quotes another resident expressing hope for justice: "I hope he’s prosecuted for a crime that is very heinous." Gregorio's preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 14.
While the investigation continues, the Casa Grande Jewish community is already looking toward recovery. For those interested in supporting the rebuilding efforts, options to contribute have been made available. Details about the donation process can be found on ABC15.
