Eswin Mejia, a 28-year-old Honduran national wanted for a 2016 motor vehicle homicide in Douglas County, Nebraska, has been arrested and extradited to the United States last Friday. Mejia was captured after an investigation by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and other agencies. He is accused of driving under the influence and causing a crash that killed 21-year-old Sarah Root, with his blood alcohol content reportedly three times the legal limit.
Mejia, who fled to Honduras after posting bond despite serious charges, has been arrested and extradited. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem stated, "The extradition and arrest of this criminal alien is the culmination of a nearly decade-long battle for justice for Sarah Root and her family," and added, "Sarah should still be here today, and this illegal alien should have never been in our country in the first place." Senator Joni Ernst, who has advocated for the case, said, "For over nine years, I have called for justice on behalf of Sarah Root, and today President Trump and his administration are delivering," as reported by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has captured and extradited Mejia, who is now in custody at Douglas County Corrections with an U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainer. ICE Homeland Security Investigations Kansas City Special Agent in Charge Mark Zito stated, "This arrest is a crucial step in our relentless pursuit of justice for the victim and her grieving family." U.S. Marshal Scott Kracl acknowledged the cooperation of multiple agencies.
