According to Denver7, Wheat Ridge police confirmed the fatality and also reported that a toddler, involved in the incident, was rushed to the hospital but is expected to recover.
In what appears to be a severe case of irresponsible driving, local authorities detained one individual on suspicion of drunken driving. It was suggested that the suspect may have been navigating the vehicle on the wrong side of the interstate when the collision occurred, as reported by The Denver Post. With the arrest made at the scene, the early morning incident took place around 5:15 a.m., leading to extended road closures as police and first responders addressed the chaos.
The investigation into the crash is ongoing, but preliminary findings have led the Wheat Ridge Police Department to hold the suspected DUI driver in custody. As detailed by CBS News Colorado, the driver was allegedly on the wrong side of the highway at the time of the accident.
Following the incident, the eastbound lanes of I-70 were closed and motorists were advised to seek alternative routes to bypass the affected area. According to Wheat Ridge police, the road remained closed as officers conducted their investigation and crews worked to clear the wreckage and ensure the safety for the eventual reopening of the thoroughfare.
