Silver Spring's downtown area witnessed a foot chase earlier this week that culminated in the arrest of a shoplifting suspect. According to the Montgomery County Police Department, 37-year-old Joshua Tyrell Mundy was apprehended after a pursuit by bicycle officers from the 3rd District Central Business District (CBD) team on Tuesday.
The incident occurred around 5:20 p.m. when employees at the CVS on East-West Highway reported a theft in action. Mundy was allegedly observed concealing items in a large bag and leaving the store without paying. Officers patrolling the area as part of a retail theft enforcement operation saw Mundy heading toward the Silver Spring Metro Station after he exited the store. The response to Mundy's attempt to flee was swift but not without confrontation. He actively resisted the arrest, leading to a physical altercation with the officers.
In efforts to subdue Mundy, officers deployed a Taser and employed control techniques trained for safe apprehension. While this ensured the situation did not escalate further, it raised concerns about the routine measures used during arrests and their implications. Following the struggle to ensure his well-being, Mundy received medical evaluation at a local hospital before being moved to the Central Processing Unit. He now faces charges of theft under $1,500 and resisting arrest.
