Biwabik Township faced a tense situation this past week as emergency services raced to the scene of a fire at the Dyno Nobel Inc. plant, a key supplier of blasting products to the mining industry, located on Vermillion Trail. The incident, which occurred last Tuesday, prompted a swift response from local emergency teams following a report of the fire at approximately 10:43 am.
According to a bulletin issued by St. Louis County, officials followed protocols from the US Department of Transportation's Emergency Response Guide, which outlined necessary precautions for such an event—a precautionary evacuation of the area was undertaken as a safety measure. Initially kindled near an exhaust vent, firefighters were able to corral the blaze without delay, and subsequently put out the fire; the evacuation orders have since been revoked, allowing residents and workers to return to their routines.
Thankfully, the effort to quell the flames at the facility was met with no reported injuries or worse—a testament to the swiftness and efficiency of the emergency personnel involved. However, the extent of the damage wrought by the fire remains to be assessed, as investigators are continuing to probe into the circumstances surrounding the origins of the incident.
