Tacoma drivers, brace yourselves for some midday inconveniences as the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) gears up for a week of maintenance work that will see the closure of ramps along northbound Interstate 705 and beneath the State Route 509 interchange starting on Monday, March 24 through on next Friday, March 28, between the hours of 8 AM and 3:30 PM.

According to an announcement by WSDOT, the work will involve your standard road upkeep - taking care of the vegetation that insists on infringing upon our concrete human endeavors, scrubbing away the graffiti that marks territorial lines invisible to many yet seen by some, smoothing over the pavement - our city's skin - which is weather-beaten and weary, and finally giving our road signs a bit of a touch-up.

If you're driving through Tacoma during those times, consider taking a different route. The city's Public Works department will have detours in place. WSDOT and local officials recommend driving outside of work hours, carpooling, or waiting if your trip isn’t urgent.

The roadwork story also includes outreach for the homeless. The City of Tacoma’s Homeless Engagement Alternatives Liaison (HEAL) will be providing services to those without a car, offering support throughout the duration of the roadwork to help those in need.
