In an effort to ensure that all community voices are heard, the Tacoma City Council has taken steps to increase senior representation on various city committees, boards, and commissions. The push for broader inclusion came after numerous discussions with older residents who expressed a need for more meaningful participation in city affairs. Council Member John Hines spearheaded the resolution, supported by fellow Council Members Joe Bushnell, Sarah Rumbaugh, and Sandesh Sadalge.
During a council meeting yesterday, Hines shared insights from his past year's engagements with senior citizens, explaining, as per the City of Tacoma's news page, "We are an aging city, with more seniors every day, and they bring with them unique needs and perspectives, particularly regarding mobility, connectivity, and safety." The goal is to make Tacoma a place where residents of all ages feel supported and connected, and the city's more than a dozen CBCs play a critical role in shaping its policies and programs.
Currently, over half of the CBCs do not have a single senior member, an imbalance the City Council aims to correct. When feasible, the resolution passed declares a priority to appoint at least one individual over 65 to each CBC. This is a concerted effort to leverage the diverse experiences and wisdom that Tacoma's seniors can provide in civic discourse and decision-making processes.
Council Member Joe Bushnell emphasized the importance of this initiative, saying, "Integrating senior residents into volunteer leadership roles underscores the City's recognition of their invaluable wisdom and expertise." According to the city's news release, he also remarked on the necessity of growth that benefits all, particularly those facing distinct challenges as they age. On the same note, Council Member Sandesh Sadalge added, "With our retirement-aged population growing, their voices must be integral to policy decisions."
