Another disquieting school incident was narrowly avoided in Tampa, as Middleton High School became the center of a police intervention when a 15-year-old student was discovered carrying a loaded gun on campus. The Tampa Police Department said Thursday that Anabella Fuentes, a white female born January 9, 2010, was found with a .22 caliber handgun during an administrative search initiated by a tip-off from a fellow student. According to a statement from the City of Tampa, the student did not threaten anyone at the school.
Commending the cooperative effort, Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw emphasized the significance of community vigilance and rapid response in maintaining safety. "The safety of our students is our top priority," Bercaw said., "Bringing a firearm onto school property is a serious offense that will not be tolerated. We commend the student who came forward and the swift action of our School Resource Officer." The undisclosed student's alertness to the situation led to the School Resource Officer's prompt interception, thereby averting potential danger.
Fuentes, who was on school property with the weapon, was arrested without incident and subsequently charged with Possession of a Weapon on School Property. She has been transported to the Juvenile Assessment Center following her apprehension.
In the community's collective effort to secure the safety of its children, shared responsibility becomes the linchpin—as Chief Bercaw added, "This quick resolution reinforces the fact that strong partnerships between a vigilant student, school officials, and an engaged School Resource Officer keep our school campuses safe and that situations are addressed immediately," as noted by the City of Tampa.
