Acting United States Attorney Sara C. Sweeney recently announced an indictment against Danny Baldwin, age 53, of Tavares, for the federal offense of possessing a firearm and ammunition as a convicted felon. As per the legal system's protocol, Baldwin is facing a serious stretch of time behind bars: a mandatory minimum of 15 years, potentially leading up to a life sentence in federal prison.
This isn't Baldwin's first brush with the law; his rap sheet includes 12 prior state felony convictions. These are not light offenses—they span second-degree murder, arson, and aggravated assault with a firearm. It was on May 22, 2024, when Baldwin decided to once again break the law and was found to be in possession of a loaded firearm. It is this action that has now qualified him to possibly receive an enhanced sentence as an Armed Career Criminal, which could significantly increase the time he must serve. An indictment is not a verdict but a formal accusation, and it is worth repeating that Baldwin, like any defendant, remains presumed innocent unless proved guilty in the court of law.
The FBI, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Eustis Police Department conducted the investigation leading to Baldwin's indictment. Assistant United States Attorney Belkis H. Callaos is set to prosecute the case. According to a press release from the United States Attorney's Office, this case is part of the broader Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a comprehensive initiative to reduce violent crime and improve community safety.
The Department of Justice has made clear its commitment to PSN as a cornerstone in the fight to reduce violent crime. In May 2021, they introduced a violent crime reduction strategy with the objective to, among other things, foster trust between communities and law enforcement, strategically prioritize enforcement efforts, and support violence-prevention community organizations. The indictment of Baldwin represents not only a singular legal action but is also a part of the overall strategy aiming to deliver safer neighborhoods through targeted enforcement and community collaboration.
