Chicago has seen a surge in transit crime lately, and a recent arrest has the city's attention. A 17-year-old girl has been implicated in a string of robberies occurring on the CTA Red Line that escalated from last September through January. The Chicago Sun-Times reported that the young woman stands accused of three robberies, as well as aggravated battery.
The teenage girl is allegedly part of a group involved in an attack on a 45-year-old man near the Garfield Station earlier this year. According to CBS Chicago, the victim was beaten and robbed on January 5 while aboard the train. This incident appears to be one in a string of offenses attributed to the girl who was apprehended this past Tuesday.
Details concerning the teen's involvement in the September incidents also paint a troubling picture. She is accused of first targeting a 21-year-old male at the Lake stop platform around 3:30 a.m. and then a 22-year-old male on the train at Monroe stop merely hours later, around 6 a.m. Each of these incidents occurred on the same day, underscoring a brazen spree of criminal activity.
The teenager's name has not been released due to her status as a juvenile, yet she faces serious allegations reflective of a broader conversation on youth and crime. She faces three felony counts of robbery and one count of aggravated battery, as reiterated by CBS Chicago, marking a decisive response from law enforcement to the recent wave of transit-related crimes. Court information for the defendant has not been made immediately available.
