The Tennessee Human Rights Commission (THRC) has taken a bold step forward by laying out its comprehensive blueprint for the next four years. In a collaborative effort with the Tennessee Office of Customer Focused Government, the THRC recently made public its strategic vision that extends through fiscal year 2028 (FY28). This roadmap is designed to enhance how the Commission approaches its cardinal mission: the protection and enforcement of civil rights for the people of Tennessee.
Muriel Nolen, Executive Director of THRC, highlighted the importance of the strategic plan in a statement shared with Tennessee Human Rights Commission Nolen emphasized its function to "guide our [THRC] actions and allow us to anticipate emerging challenges in order to adapt accordingly". Her message highlights the growing necessity for the Commission to perform at peak capacity, offering Tennessee's citizens a strong platform to combat discrimination.
At the heart of the released plan lie four (4) central goals that aim to reshape the Commission's operational efficacy. These include boosting its case-processing capabilities, embracing modernization through technology, fostering a richer internal culture within the organization, and increasing public knowledge about THRC and its purpose. Nolen informed the Tennessee Human Rights Commission that these initiatives are geared towards a singular outcome to "provide a clear road map to more effectively and efficiently safeguard individuals from discrimination". Details of the Executive Summary for the THRC 4-Year Strategic Plan are available on the Tennessee Human Rights Commission website.
The THRC is responsible for enforcing civil rights in Tennessee, addressing discrimination in employment, housing, and public accommodations. It prohibits discrimination based on race, color, creed, national origin, religion, sex, disability, age (40+), familial status, and retaliation. The commission also ensures the state follows Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which bans discrimination in federally funded programs.
