The Tarrant County District Attorney's Office recently acknowledged the North Richland Police Department's diligence in a notable fraud case that concluded with a 25-year prison sentence for Matthew Mixon. In a scam that preyed on over 70 individuals and a financial institution, Mixon maneuvered nearly $600,000 to fuel his gambling issues, using his company, Straight Financing, Inc., as the front for his illicit operations. The company was involved in the processing of loans for RVs and boats, an operation which Mixon failed to see through to the end.
Per the detailed report shared by the Tarrant County DA's Office on their Facebook page, the fraud took place between February and October of 2019. The culprit's methods included giving clients various fabricated reasons for non-payment – in one instance, Mixon even claimed his child was gravely ill in the hospital. But the North Richland Police, ever vigilant, pieced together the trail of deception that led back to Mixon and his gambling addiction that fueled this whole charade.
Not content with just the RV and boat loan scams, Mixon expanded his fraudulent activities beyond Texas. He ventured into Tennessee and Louisiana, where, masquerading as a contractor, he managed to swindle additional victims by failing to complete projects that people had paid him for. This cross-state pattern of deceit pointed to an M.O. that was all too familiar to those affected in Texas.
Ultimately, justice prevailed as Mixon, 38, stood before the court and received his sentence. It was the culmination of persistent efforts by law enforcement officers committed to maintaining the safety and trust within the community they've sworn to protect. In cases such as these, it is a stark reminder of the fragile nature of trust in the business world and the serious consequences that await those who choose to gamble with it.
