Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett has come under fire for remarks made during a banquet in Los Angeles where she took a jab at Gov. Greg Abbott, referring to him as "Gov. Hot Wheels." The comment, which occurred at a Human Rights Campaign event, sparked a wave of criticism. "You all know we got Gov. Hot Wheels down there. Come on, now," said Crockett, a statement recorded by the Human Rights Campaign’s YouTube channel and reported by CW39. "And the only thing hot about him is that he is a hot-ass mess, honey."
Gov. Abbott, a Republican who was elected in 2014, has been using a wheelchair since he was paralyzed in a 1984 accident, which was also detailed by CBS News. The incident has confined Abbott, now 67, to a wheelchair for more than 40 years. Republican leaders were swift to call out Crockett for her aside. Texas Sen. John Cornyn noted on the social media platform X, "Crockett's comments are disgraceful."
Despite the backlash, Crockett defended her wording, purporting that her critique was aimed at Abbott's immigration policies and not his physical condition. In a response on X, Crockett claimed, "I wasn't thinking about the governor's condition," adding that her reference to "Hot A** Mess" was directed at Abbott's "terrible policies," as per a report by CBS News. She was particularly incensed by accusations from Trump supporters, pointing out their bizarre inconsistency, given Trump's past indiscretions with insensitive nicknames and mockery of disabilities.
Further complicating Crockett's position, CBS News reports that Texas Rep. Randy Weber has introduced a censure resolution due to her comments about Gov. Abbott and for suggesting that Elon Musk, in his role at the Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency, "be taken down." Crockett’s office has remained silent, not immediately replying to requests for comment on the incident and the rising political heat she now finds herself in.
