Three individuals in Flint, Michigan, have been arrested following a discovery at a local residence where officials found neglected children and animals in what has been described as a "deplorable" living environment. As reported by WZZM 13, The Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson detailed the distressing scene involving a 9-year-old boy, two deceased dogs, and two severely emaciated dogs.
The saga unfolded after AT&T workers in Flint stumbled upon roughly $30,000 of stolen wireless cable; their subsequent actions led to law enforcement discovering the shocking conditions within a nearby home, the workers had been at the scene to deal with the cable theft but ended up alerting authorities to something much more sinister a situation involving, "starvation of animals, neglect, neglect of children, this case has it all," Swanson lamented in a statement covered by FOX 2 Detroit. Charles Ashbaker, 38, Kelly Walker, 29, and Dougal Nelson, 47, all from Flint, have been arrested on multiple charges.
Upon searching the property, authorities found two dogs in cages outside the residence, one deceased and the other in poor condition, and inside the house was an emaciated puppy and another dead puppy found in a pizza box, "You don't treat animals this way. You don't treat people this way," Swanson expressed frustration, a sentiment noted by WZZM 13. The deplorable state of the home extended to its non-functional refrigerator, which was filled with rotting food.
Following emergency intervention, deputies managed to rescue the surviving dogs and coordinated with Child Protective Services to secure a safer environment for the 9-year-old child, Swanson revealed, with charges against the adults include animal abuse, torture, and child abuse, "These are the individuals that could have at any point called 911 and said, 'I can't take care of my dogs, I can't take care of this child.' That's all we're asking," Swanson reaffirmed in a statement obtained by WZZM 13.
