Last week in Hutto, a small Texas community was shaken by a tragic and violent event. On February 27, three people were found dead in a residence in the 200 block of Seaholm Lane in what authorities have deemed an "apparent murder-suicide." The Hutto Police Department identified the deceased as 60-year-old Kerry Carter, 58-year-old Deffenia Lynch, and 41-year-old Iosha Shaw, FOX 7 Austin reported.
Officers responded to an unsettling call early in the morning, leading to the discovery of the bodies. According to the Hutto Police Department, a man called authorities and said "he had just killed two people and was going to commit suicide," causing the police to immediately enact an emergency response. Arriving at the scene and establishing an incident command, officers attempted to negotiate through the residence's front door, only to be met by the sound of a single gunshot. Inside, they located the suspect and both victims, all deceased, KXAN reports.
The subsequent investigation by multiple agencies revealed troubling details. While searching the house, officers discovered a vehicle in a closed garage, filled with smoke and containing accelerants. Although additional fire and arson specialists were called to the scene to assess any further risks, Chief Jeffrey Yarbrough assured the public that there was no danger to nearby residents or property, according to FOX 7 Austin. Speaking at a press conference on February 28, Yarbrough revealed that while there is a call history to the home, it was only minor and medical.
The shock of the event resounds through the tight-knit Hutto community as it grapples with the loss and its aftermath. "This is a devastating situation, and we understand the impact it has on our community," Chief Yarbrough said, in comments obtained by KXAN. "Our hearts go out to the family, friends, and the entire community affected by this tragedy. Incidents like this are extremely rare in Hutto, but when they do happen, we come together to support one another and help those impacted through these difficult times," he added. The Hutto Police has not disclosed the connection between the three individuals or what may have led to the shooting.
