In a decisive move toward urban sustainability, Tulsa Mayor Monroe Nichols has declared the inception of the Tulsa Sustainability Task Force, a new city initiative aimed at bolstering the city's battle against climate change and its consequences. Drawing from diverse community stakeholders, the task force is tasked with aligning Tulsa's environmental policies with its comprehensive plan, planitulsa, and exploring further best practices used by other leading cities. "To build a stronger, healthier, and more resilient Tulsa, we can all do our part to create a more sustainable and equitable city for future generations," Nichols highlighted in a statement obtained by the City of Tulsa's press room.

The newly established group, comprising 15 appointees by the mayor, reflects Tulsa's diverse interests, including business and industry voices known for their environmental commitments, representatives from local tribes like the Muscogee, Cherokee, and Osage Nations, and academia experts in sustainability research. City Councilor Laura Bellis noted the importance of proactive measures for the community's safety, especially in the face of extreme weather conditions. "The formation of a task force to focus on sustainability will help us achieve these goals across sectors," Bellis stated in the City of Tulsa's announcement.

The task force's mandate is to conduct an exhaustive review of planitulsa and evaluate implementable elements both in the immediate future and long term. Funding avenues are also on the agenda, as the team will identify potential grants, public-private partnerships, and federal programs to financially back their initiatives. As per the executive order, a preliminary report is due in six months, and a conclusive roadmap for sustainability strategies will be presented within a year.

Emphasizing the role of community health in sustainable development, Councilor Bellis pointed out as per the City of Tulsa website, "Most importantly, this impacts community members, and our whole city's health relies on ensuring that people live in safe and sustainable communities." Broad consultation and research efforts, including studying sustainability leaders across the nation, are a part of this task force's pursuit to model successful programs that could thrive in Tulsa's unique landscape.
