Two individuals were arrested following a demonstration that took place in Portland's Old Town on March 27th, specifically targeting a local business. According to the City of Portland, the protest was aimed at making noise in opposition to the business and its owner, sparking concerns about property damage.
Despite initial restraint from law enforcement, the situation escalated when demonstrators tried to gain entry to the establishment, resulting in an assault on private security staff, the officers remained on scene without engaging with the group they monitored the demonstration to prevent chaos, ensuing an altercation where protest participants were able to pry the door open, which the employees tried to shut, and one of the private security operatives was attacked by multiple individuals, as detailed by the City of Portland. After the incident, the security personnel retreated and contacted the police.
The Police Bureau's strategy of intervening at later times and places where safety could be assured led to the eventual arrest of two protesters. "Our response was carefully planned to ensure both community safety and accountability," Commander Brian Hughes was quoted saying on the Portland Government website. Nicole Middleton, 42, was taken into custody facing a series of charges, including assault and disorderly conduct, while Rhythm Kenaley, 30, was cited for criminal mischief related to vandalizing the business's window with a paint marker.
