Two foreign nationals, hailing from Mexico and El Salvador, respectively, have found themselves in the legal spotlight after being charged with illegally reentering the United States post-deportation. Edwin Geovany Salazar-Giron, age 40, and Javier Anaya-Acosta, age 43, faced a federal judge in Las Vegas for their initial court appearance regarding this matter.
The preliminary hearing for the two is set for March 20 before United States Magistrate Judge Nancy J. Koppe. In a twist of events, during their court proceedings, the allegations suggest that both Salazar-Giron and Anaya-Acosta were previously deported and returned to the U.S. without proper authorization, according to the District of Nevada's U.S. Attorney’s Office contained in criminal complaints.
ICE agents at the Henderson Police Department arrested Salazar-Giron on February 25. With a record that includes felony convictions for Trafficking Cocaine and Possession of firearms or Knife During Certain Crimes, he was previously sent packing from U.S. soil back on July 17, 2015. Meanwhile, two days after Salazar-Giron's capture, ICE agents played a similar tune for Anaya-Acosta, who boasts a past muddied by a felony conviction for being an Illegal Alien in Possession of firearms and Ammunition.
Salazar-Giron and Anaya-Acosta face up to 20 years in prison, a three-year supervised release, and a possible $250,000 fine plus a $100 special assessment for illegal reentry. Acting U.S. Attorney Sue Fahami and Salt Lake City Field Office Director Michael Bernacke made these details public. However, both are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
