Two juveniles were detained by Springfield authorities following a shooting that took place outside Union Station yesterday afternoon. According to a Springfield Police Department report, the incident occurred around 3:45 p.m., triggering an immediate response from local law enforcement after a Springfield Police Officer, already on scene for a separate detail, heard gunshots and a subsequent ShotSpotter activation.
The rapid police response led to the discovery of two individuals suffering from gunshots, both of whom were transported with non-life-threatening injuries to Baystate hospital. The collaboration of multiple agencies, including the Springfield Police Firearms Investigation Unit and the Hampden County Sheriff's Deputies, allowed to quickly pinpoint three individuals of interest. Utilizing the Real-Time Analysis Center's cameras, the suspects were located on Bridge Street.
Amidst the unfolding chaos, a 17-year-old female was detained with an illegal firearm found in her possession. Her apprehension on Elliot Street preceded the capture of her counterparts – two males. One, an 18-year-old, was caught on State Street after initially attempting to flee the scene. Despite being processed at Springfield Police Headquarters, he would be released prior to booking. The third suspect, a 16-year-old male with a prior firearms conviction, remained combative, assaulting an officer even after being restrained in handcuffs.
The same 16-year-old proved to be persistently resistant, later striking another officer at the hospital where he was taken to ensure no injuries had been sustained. Officers conducting a search of his belongings unearthed an additional haul of narcotics, including 60 bags of heroin and two bags of crack-cocaine hidden within his shoulder bag. As noted by the Springfield Police, "The victims and at least one suspect are believed to have known each other."
