On Thursday, March 27, a Piper Cherokee aircraft found itself in distress and ultimately came to rest in the bushes near the Royal Kunia Country Club, disrupting what would have been an ordinary afternoon. According to the Honolulu Fire Department's official report, the incident prompted a response from approximately 50 personnel across 14 units after a 911 call came through at noon.
First responders arrived at 12:08 p.m. to find the aircraft in need of immediate attention but not on fire. Inside were two men, ages 38 and 22, who had managed to escape. Miraculously, both men were alive despite the dangerous situation. The Honolulu Fire Department took charge of the rescue and used Air 1 to transport them to a landing zone for medical care.
At 12:37 p.m., Emergency Medical Services took over care. One occupant refused treatment, while the other required further medical attention but was stable. The Honolulu Fire Department reported no injuries among their team, marking the end of a response that could have gone much worse. All Honolulu Fire Department personnel were safely accounted for after the response, despite the risks involved in aircraft emergencies.
