Travelers on U.S. 601 in Union County faced unexpected delays as a large structure fire prompted road closures in both directions, between Pennigar Rd. and Unionville Indian Trail Rd. The fire, which drew a substantial response from local firefighters and emergency services, resulted in no reported injuries, but caused significant traffic disruptions during the time it took to contain the blaze.
The Union County Sheriff's Office provided updates on the situation via social media, urging motorists to find alternate routes and to exercise caution in the vicinity of the incident. "Please adjust your afternoon commute accordingly and use caution when traveling in this area," the Union County Sheriff's Office stated in a Facebook post. The advisory also reminded the public not to ignore roadblocks set by fire and law enforcement vehicles.
In an effort to aid commuters, the sheriff's office noted that real-time traffic conditions could be accessed through the UCSO's free smartphone application, available for download. The app aims to help residents navigate around such emergencies and plan their travel routes more effectively.
Later in the day, Sheriff Cathey extended his gratitude to the emergency personnel for their swift action. "Sheriff Cathey would like to thank all of our local firefighters and emergency services personnel for their swift response in this incident," reported the Union County Sheriff's Office after the road had successfully reopened to normal traffic patterns earlier than expected at 3:55 PM. This cooperative effort underscores the commitment of Union County's first responders to public safety and their efficiency in managing crisis situations.
