As spring pedals into full bloom, the Valley is gearing up for a month-long celebration of all things bicycling. Kicking off Valley Bike Month, events scattered throughout April aim to encourage locals to save a buck, cut down on CO2 emissions, and keep their hearts pumping by choosing two wheels instead of four. With a slew of discounts, giveaways, and friendly competitions, Valley Metro and local businesses are making it hard to resist the lure of the bike path, as reported by Valley Metro.
According to ABC15, deals are plentiful, with everything from half-priced burritos at Mesquite Fresh Street Mex to quench post-ride hunger pangs on National Burrito Day, to gratis avocado bacon burgers at Shake Shack for a minimum $10 order. If cycling's worked up a family-sized appetite, Peter Piper Pizza's offering a deal that includes a large pizza, drinks, and game points for under $25. For those looking to score some additional gear or get a head start on next season's rides, Arizona Snowbowl is letting customers use their 2025–2026 season passes right away. And let's not forget about the kids; the annual free Bunny Bash at Tempe Marketplace will set 15,000 pre-filled eggs loose for an egg-citing hunt.
Valley Metro's website echoes these sentiments and adds an enticing competitive edge to the pedal-pushing proceedings. Last year, Valley Bike Month saw participants logging over 26,000 miles, which, besides burning a considerable number of calories, also kept over 11 tons of CO2 emissions out of our already toasty Arizona sky. For those looking to join the green commuting movement, the site is equipped with tools to track trips, find biking partners, and even win a new bike or a hotel stay for putting the rubber to the road.
Community initiatives are moving forward with free bike rides and safety education. For example, the Glendale Family Bike Ride on April 6 will provide snacks, water, and safety info for all ages. Helmets are required, and old helmets can be turned into planters. Cyclists will also get a special medal at the end of their ride. In Chandler, Mayor Kevin Hartke invites residents to wear neon and enjoy a relaxing ride on the Paseo Trail during the Chandler Family Bike Ride, as per ABC15.
