Waimea residents and tennis fans, Cook Field is getting a makeover starting on Monday, with closure lasting until January 2026, weather permitting. The closure is due to a major construction project to upgrade the tennis courts and other amenities.

According to a press release from the County of Kauai website, this isn't a small touch-up we're talking about. The work will see the resurfacing of tennis courts, updates to the surrounding rock retaining walls, and a bundle of other improvements. The tune of $3.2 million dollars will be poured into the whole affair, with Jas. W. Glover, Ltd. is taking up the reins on the construction starting March 14.

The upgrades are extensive, including repairs to the tennis court rock wall, resurfacing the courts, repainting lines for tennis, and adding pickleball courts. The project also includes replacing old fences and upgrading to LED lighting for nighttime play.

Parking near the tennis courts along Ola Road and Tsuchiya Road will be unavailable starting on Monday, as the area becomes off-limits for public parking. The left-field side of the park will also be used as a construction staging area.

While the closures may be inconvenient for regular users, the Department of Parks and Recreation asks for the community’s patience. For more information or questions, contact the Department at 808-241-4460 or email [email protected].
