The Washington State Department of Transportation, in partnership with the Washington State Department of Commerce, has rolled out an Electric Vehicle Mapping and Planning Tool (EV-MAP). This happens to be a user-friendly digital innovation designed to facilitate the expansion of electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure across Washington state. Tonia Buell, the Alternative Fuels Program Manager at WSDOT, said in a statement that obtained by the department, "We’re excited to launch the EV-MAP and hear from users who will help shape Washington’s move to electric vehicles." The tool provides access to over 100 public datasets, making it easier to pinpoint strategic locations for new charging stations.
With EV adoption rates in Washington seeing a proliferation, jumping 34% from 2023 to 2024, the new tool couldn't come at a more opportune time. A total of 223,995 electric vehicles were registered in the state, with electric car sales comprising 20% of new car purchases in late 2024. However, as more drivers shift towards electric, the demand for a robust charging network grows even stronger, crafting an electrified grid of power that meets drivers at the crossroads of necessity and innovation.
The EV-MAP is expected to be a critical asset in planning and policy-making.
