A youth soccer game in Northborough, Massachusetts, took a turn for the worse when a fight broke out between a parent and a coach of an opposing team. The incident occurred at the Teamworks sports complex on Otis Street, and local law enforcement was called to the scene. According to NBC Boston, the altercation took place around 6 p.m. Last Saturday.
Following an examination of video footage from the game, police decided to swiftly take action and summonsed a 36-year-old West Boylston man who is accused of assault and battery. It was later confirmed by Worcester Police that one of their own officers was involved in the fight and has since been placed on administrative leave. "He is on administrative leave while the incident is under investigation, per policy," Worcester police Lt. Sean Murtha said in a statement obtained by NBC Boston. The charged individual's name is yet to be released, pending his arraignment in Westborough District Court.
The Northborough Police Department has been tight-lipped on the specifics of what led to the physical confrontation, offering no further details about the case publicly. As per procedure, they noted in a press release that the defendant's identity would remain undisclosed until the court proceedings begin.
In relation to the investigation, WCVB further reported that the Northborough Police Department is actively seeking to formally press charges against the West Boylston father. Additionally, there are currently no reports indicating when exactly the arraignment is expected to occur.
