The closing bell tolls for a Williamsburg icon, as Marlow & Sons prepares to shut its doors after more than two decades of service. Andrew Tarlow, the culinary mind behind the neighborhood gem, has announced that the restaurant will cease operations this Sunday, April 6, citing “I’m heartbroken to have to close Marlow & Sons, but a recent significant increase in our rent has presented a financial challenge that we aren’t able to overcome,” as noted by Eater.
Since its opening in 2004, Marlow & Sons, co-founded by Mark Firth, has become a staple in Williamsburg, helping shape the neighborhood before its transformation into a hub of luxury high-rises and trendy developments. While co-owner Andrew Tarlow has expressed sadness over the closure, citing it as a reflection of a specific time and place, the move highlights the broader trends of rising rents and gentrification that are forcing out long-established businesses in the borough.
Marlow & Sons' influence on Williamsburg's culinary scene is undeniable. Starting as a general store and evolving into a versatile dining destination, it became a key player alongside Diner, another successful collaboration between Tarlow and Firth, as reported by Gothamist. Marlow & Sons will host its final day of service this Sunday, offering patrons one last chance to experience the beloved spot from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. all week.
