The aftermath of a tragic hit-and-run incident that struck down 18-year-old bicyclist Tiana Smith of Zion has now reached a critical juncture in the quest for justice. The driver of the GMC SUV involved, identified as 33-year-old Alex Landa of Winthrop Harbor, has been indicted by a Lake County Grand Jury, as per a statement from the Lake County Sheriff's Office.
An exhaustive investigation carried out by the Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Team pinpointed the responsibility on Landa. This probe culminated in an indictment for one count of failure to report a crash involving death, a class 1 felony, and one count of aggravated DUI causing death, a class 2 felony, as detailed by Lake County.
The Lake County Grand Jury, having been presented with a trove of evidence on Wednesday, March 5, found the grounds to move forward with the indictment. Subsequently, a Lake County Judge sanctioned a warrant for Landa's arrest.
"No family should have to endure such a tragedy, and we hope these charges bring them the first measure of justice," Sheriff John D. Idleburg was quoted in the official announcement. He went on to express his respect for the investigative team's painstaking work to bring forth a suspect: "Their dedication to uncovering the truth and seeking justice for victims is a testament to their professionalism and commitment to our community’s safety."
