A woman was seriously injured in a head-on collision that occurred in Paw Paw near the local high school yesterday afternoon, necessitating her extraction from the vehicle and subsequent hospitalization with significant injuries. According to WWMT, the incident occurred when the 51-year-old woman's sedan strayed across the centerline on Red Arrow Highway and collided with an oncoming vehicle carrying two teenagers.
The Van Buren County Sheriff's Office reported that the crash happened at approximately 2:45 p.m. in front of Paw Paw High School, as stated by WOODTV. The eastbound sedan, driven by the woman, first crossed into the opposite lane, striking the westbound car head-on. The car had a 16-year-old boy and an 18-year-old man inside who were just leaving the school. The impact caused both vehicles to spin and face the opposite direction, with both cars sustaining heavy front-end damage.
Upon the arrival of deputies, the woman was discovered unresponsive. Firefighters subsequently had to extricate her from the wrecked sedan. She was transported for treatment due to the seriousness of her injuries. According to MLive, both teens in the other car were treated on the scene for minor injuries and released. Red Arrow Highway was closed for around an hour and a half to allow for the investigation and cleanup.
The Sheriff's Office is still investigating the crash, and no further updates on the woman's condition were immediately available. The incident disrupted the typically quiet afternoon as students departed from Paw Paw High School, drawing assistance from Paw Paw and Mattawan police forces.
