At this year's RodeoHouston Junior Market Steer Auction, young Texans walked away with a hefty $1.4 million in their pockets, thanks to record-breaking bids for their prize-winning steers. In an event that drew a crowd to the point where it was standing room only in NRG Arena, 16-year-old Jacob Schickedanz from Perryton claimed the Grand Champion title with his steer, Kareem, fetching a staggering $675,000 from the auction block, as reported by cw39.

Opening the bids at $50,000 was Congressman Jake Ellzey, who is not only a family friend but a longtime supporter of the Schickedanz family, with Jacob, a distinguished straight-A student and powerlifter, expressing how the process was demanding, full of "hard days, early mornings, and long nights," and that he received unwavering support from his family, "They support me—my mom, dad, and two sisters. I couldn’t do it without them," the young winner told KHOU; his academic and extracurricular ambitions are balanced with his sights set on attending Texas A&M University in the future.

Sally Flores, Belinda Flores-Young, and Chay Flores-Taylor took home Kareem, dedicating their support and donation in memory of Rigo Flores Sr., who found great joy in the opportunities provided by the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. "He loved this show," Flores-Taylor said. "He loved the opportunities it provides. We just want to keep his memory alive," a sentiment echoing the importance of tradition shared with KHOU.

Meanwhile, setting a new record at this year's auction was 17-year-old Jett Hale of Miami, Texas, whose Reserve Champion Charolais Cross steer, Mike, secured an impressive bid of $690,000, trumping the Grand Champion's sale, "I don’t think people understand how much time, effort, and money go into these things. You have to work with them every day and keep them going so people can present them like this," Hale elucidated the rigorous process to KHOU; the Champagne Cowgirls and the Tutcher Family Foundation didn't hesitate to write the check for Mike, reinforcing their commitment to the event and the young exhibitors.

The auction not only represented a financial windfall for these aspiring ranchers but also highlighted the deep-rooted community aspects of the event, with bidders like Ellie Francisco and the Champagne Cowgirls sharing touching recollections from previous auctions, "When he won Reserve last night, we were very, very excited," Francisco recalled a past experience with Jett Hale as shared with KHOU, a testament to the lasting impact of these youths and their remarkable steers on the participants and audience alike.
