A man was shot late Sunday near Pittsburgh's vital nerve of public safety, the Downtown Public Safety Center. WPXI reported that the incident occurred around 11 p.m. on the 400 block of Wood Street, which is directly across from the safety center. Officers stationed there were quickly on the scene after reports of the shooting came in.
The victim, a 19-year-old male, suffered a gunshot wound to his groin and was found in immediate proximity to the center tasked with overseeing Downtown's public safety. Even while sustaining grave injuries, the young man was able to communicate to first responders that the origin of his wound lay elsewhere, on Smithfield Street. Despite being taken to the hospital in stable condition, his words have left officers to not only seek his assailant but also to determine the exact location where this act of violence unfolded.
Under review now is surveillance video footage from the area, which officers hope can shed light on the circumstances of the shooting. WTAE's coverage of the incident confirms that, as of early this morning, no arrests related to the shooting have been made.
Investigations are ongoing, spearheaded by the Pittsburgh Police Violent Crime Unit detectives, who continue to evaluate evidence to act and bring those responsible to justice quickly.
