A 24-year-old man, known as Jeremy Ortega, was fatally shot in the chest in a shocking incident that occurred in the Bronx yesterday morning. The residential street of Quincy Ave. was disturbed by the sound of gunfire at around 4:45 a.m., according to the New York Daily News. Ortega was quickly attended to by medics and taken to Jacobi Medical Center, where, despite urgent care, he died within an hour, police stated.
Ortega's sudden death has left the community in shock and mourning, as incidents of violence are rare in this part of the Bronx. "It is one of the quietest neighborhoods, probably in the Bronx. Yeah -- stuff like this -- it's not common. So when you see this, it shocks you," one resident expressed in an interview with ABC7 New York. Ortega's family had only recently made the neighborhood their home earlier this year.
While the police are actively seeking several suspects, no arrests have been made, and a motive for the shooting has not been established. Neighbours have recounted eerily to authorities and reporters alike, the sounds that pierced the early morning tranquility.
Further details paint a picture of Ortega as a member of the community with a familiar presence, often seen walking his dog. He lived with his parents and two sisters, and had suffered from a gunpoint robbery mere months before this fatal shooting, as neighbors noted to the New York Daily News. One of Ortega's co-workers described him: “He’s a nice guy to us and a smart boy and a hard-working man.” The impact of his passing extends to his workplace, where he was a supervisor at a recycling business.
This incident marks the third homicide within the precinct this year, a sober statistic considering that the 45th Precinct saw three killings for the whole of 2024, as per NYPD statistics.
