Lincoln Center Theater is throwing open its box office doors Thursday morning with a rare deal for New York theatergoers: $16 tickets to previews of its upcoming revival of The Sound of Music, one of the most beloved musicals in Broadway history. The catch is that only 300 people will get in on the discount, and they will need to show up in person to claim it.
The promotion marks the public launch of a production that has been generating buzz for months. According to PIX11, the discounted preview tickets go on sale Thursday at 11 a.m., limited to two per person, sold exclusively in person at the theater's box office. Full-priced tickets for the run will go on sale the same day through the Lincoln Center website, per the same report.
The revival will begin preview performances on March 23, 2027, ahead of an official opening night on April 15, 2027, for a limited 17-week engagement at the Vivian Beaumont Theater. It will be the first Broadway revival of the musical in nearly 29 years, following the 1998 Susan H. Schulman-directed production at the Martin Beck Theatre that starred Rebecca Luker and ran for 533 performances, according to the Internet Broadway Database.
A New Take On A Family Favorite
The production is directed by Lear deBessonet, Lincoln Center Theater's Kewsong Lee Artistic Director, whose staging of Ragtime won the 2026 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical. Choreography comes from Tony winner Christopher Gattelli, who previously won for Newsies and choreographed the musical comedy series Schmigadoon!, according to Lincoln Center Theater's production page.
The production is directed by Lear deBessonet. The 1965 film adaptation starring Julie Andrews arrived six years after the stage musical's original premiere, per Time Out. Leading the cast as Maria Rainer is Tony Award nominee Jasmine Amy Rogers, who earned acclaim starring in BOOP! The Musical on Broadway and received a 2025 Tony nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical, according to the Tony Awards.
Free Donuts And A Live Broadcast
The theater is pairing the ticket drop with pop-culture flourishes designed to draw new and younger audiences. The first 100 in-person ticket buyers will receive promotional Dough-Re-Mi donuts supplied by I'm donut ?, a Japanese donut shop that offers nama brioche-based donuts and opened its first U.S. location in Times Square in April 2025, according to Forbes.
Media personality Danielle Monaro appears at the box office, and limited-edition merchandise is also on offer.
Beyond The $16 Deal
For theatergoers who miss the 300-ticket window, Lincoln Center Theater also offers an annual LCT Broadway Membership. It is one way the nonprofit institution says it aims to keep pricing accessible throughout the show's 17-week run.
The musical itself carries deep roots in Broadway history. The original 1959 production starred Mary Martin and Theodore Bikel and was the final musical collaboration written by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II before Hammerstein died nine months later, according to Rodgers & Hammerstein's official history. That legacy includes now-standard songs like Do-Re-Mi, My Favorite Things and Edelweiss, all of which remain part of the show, per PIX11's report on the revival.
