A tragic incident unfolded early this morning when a 6-year-old boy was shot in the head as he sat eating a Happy Meal in his family's Greenspoint-area apartment. The shooting took place at around 12:30 a.m. at an apartment complex on Northborough Drive, near Rush Creek Drive east of the North Freeway. According to KHOU, the boy was in the living room of a downstairs apartment at the time of the incident and was rushed to the hospital where he was reported to be conscious and breathing.
Investigators believe the young victim was caught in the crossfire during a shootout between two separate parties, with stray bullets indiscriminately piercing three different apartments. Shell casings of various calibers at the scene seemingly confirm this violent exchange. "We had apartments hit both upstairs and downstairs. The victim was in a downstairs apartment," HPD Lt. Horelica was quoted as saying by KHOU. Despite evidence of the shots' directions and the recovered casings, no witnesses have stepped forward.
The 6-year-old, who has not been named, was inside the apartment with his mother when the bullet struck him. As of now, Houston police have not taken anyone into custody nor they have released information on possible shooters. The authorities are urging anyone with knowledge of the incident to come forward and contact police or Crime Stoppers, as per ABC13.
As the local community grapples with the senselessness of a child being harmed in their own home, the police continue to search thoroughly to gather information and possibly identify the individuals involved. "We have no witnesses. Just the evidence of the directions of the shots that were fired and the different casings leads us to believe that it was two separate parties firing at each other," Lt. Horelica told KHOU.
