The Alameda-Contra Costa Transit District (AC Transit) has been honored with the 2025 East Bay Innovation Award for Community Impact, a recognition presented by the East Bay Economic Development Alliance. While the ceremonies happened last Thursday, the accolades still echo through the corridors of public transport and education in the East Bay. The award highlights those who foster innovation and serve as leaders in industry and community within Alameda and Contra Costa Counties.

According to the Alameda-Contra Costa Transit District, their win was in the hotly-contested Community Impact category, outshining at least fifty other nominees. The East Bay EDA considered numerous factors, including how nominees addressed regional operational challenges and their role in fostering a culture that propels innovation forward in the East Bay. AC Transit's initiative, the Zero Emission Bus University (ZEBU), in partnership with Hayward's Chabot College, was a significant part of their win, marking the beginning of the nation’s first transit-collegiate collaboration and a new chapter in workforce development.

The innovative ZEBU program offers vocational and academic pathways, training a new generation of workers in zero-emission technology. It utilizes augmented reality (AR) to teach high-voltage systems safely, and AR also enables remote training across AC Transit's facilities. This bridging of the digital divide with practical accessibility is what educational and environmental progress looks like. What’s more, AC Transit's Maintenance Trainers have become official Instructors of Record through this partnership, which allows them to teach half of the courses toward an Associate of Science degree at Chabot College.
