Aliquippa residents may feel like they're in a scene from "The Revenant" after a black bear was spotted casually making its way through the 1800 block of Davidson Street yesterday morning. The unexpected visitor was captured on a home security camera, prompting the local police department to issue a public safety announcement. As reported by CBS News Pittsburgh, the local authorities confirmed the sighting and immediately notified the Pennsylvania Game Commission.
While the police have not received any additional complaints following the initial sighting, they are still urging anyone who comes into contact with the large mammal to proceed with caution and call 911. In a statement reported by the City of Aliquippa Police Department, they advised the public to review the safety tips provided by the National Park Service.
According to Audacy, this is not a cause for Frankenstein-esque villager mob assembly, as bear attacks are extremely rare. However, they do offer some advice for those rare encounters: making loud noises to alert the bear, backing away slowly without losing eye contact, remaining calm, and avoiding sudden movements. As a last resort, they suggest fighting back with whatever is at hand if attacked.
