A tragic collision took place on U.S. 27 in Lake County this past Wednesday, leading to the death of a 30-year-old Altamonte Springs woman and leaving two others injured. The Florida Highway Patrol has confirmed that the crash occurred near Groveland, just north of Adkins Lane, when the victim, operating her vehicle on the wrong side of the highway, collided with a Toyota Corolla and subsequently, a Jeep Renegade. ClickOrlando reported that the incident occurred around 9:50 p.m.
Initial investigations indicate that the woman was driving a 2017 Dodge Charger southward in the northbound lane, directly into oncoming traffic. Upon colliding with the Corolla, the Charger then impacted the Renegade. Responders pronounced the woman behind the wheel of the Charger dead at the scene. At the same time, the drivers of the other two vehicles involved were promptly taken to medical facilities to address their injuries.
The driver of the Corolla, a 45-year-old woman from Leesburg, experienced minor injuries and was transported to Orlando Health South Lake Hospital, as per the FHP crash report shared by WESH. The 27-year-old Leesburg woman driving the Jeep Renegade, on the other hand, suffered serious injuries and was admitted to Orlando Regional Medical Center.
The sequence of events leading to the impact and unfortunate death shines a light on the potential hazards that wrong-way driving inflicts on our roadways. The identities of the individuals involved have not been released yet, and no further details about the crash are currently available.
