Apache Junction embraces the future with the opening of its newest workforce training center. The Future48 Workforce Accelerator, dedicated to providing specialty training in battery manufacturing, commenced operations last Friday. In a joint initiative with Pinal County, Central Arizona College, and LG Energy Solution, this 19,850-square-foot facility signals a strategic push towards electrification and high-quality job creation within Arizona’s boundaries.
Among the distinguished attendees of the grand opening were Sandra Watson, President and CEO of Arizona Commerce Authority; Pinal County Supervisors, including Jeff Serdy and Mike Goodman; as well as Queen Creek Mayor Julia Wheatley, all of whom played a pivotal role in bringing the project to life. According to a Pinal County government announcement, the accelerator is poised to become a seam in the local fabric where jobs of the present meet the manufacturing demands of the future.
Richard Ra, President of LG Energy Solution Arizona, shared an inspiring update on the factory's construction progress, heralding the establishment of the company's first U.S.-based cylindrical battery plant. Expected to serve leading automakers, this new facility not only signifies an influx of well-paying jobs to the community but is also a testament to LG's commitment to U.S. electrification efforts.
“The Future48 Workforce Accelerator will not only expand workforce training opportunities focused on battery manufacturing but will allow CAC to expand educational opportunities for students to learn the latest LGES manufacturing technology from industry experts," Dr. Jackie Elliott, President and CEO of Central Arizona College, told Pinal County government representatives. The hope is that students immersed in this innovative form of education can directly segue into meaningful careers with LG Energy Solution's growing enterprise, specifically at its Queen Creek facility.
Designed to address Pinal County’s vociferous appeals for high-paying, quality jobs, the training center stands as a collaborative milestone. By training a workforce adept in manufacturing cutting-edge batteries for electric vehicles and other applications, the center promises to become a vital feeder into Arizona’s advanced manufacturing sector. Furthermore, echoes of Governor Katie Hobbs’ intentions were heard at the event, as she had previously espoused the expansion of workforce development as key to realizing the Arizona Promise, cultivating a skilled workforce ready for the dynamic, high-demand jobs, and bolstering both families and the state's economy.
The facility's launch builds upon the precedent set by Arizona's first Future48 Workforce Accelerator, Drive48, indicating a concerted effort to establish the state as a hub for advanced manufacturing. Sandra Watson, along with the collaborative partners, emphasized the importance of such ventures in the creation of new employment opportunities — 1,500 by 2027, per Richard Ra's projection — that will invigorate the local economy and precipitate the state's ascent as a preeminent bastion for cutting-edge manufacturing endeavors.
