The father of the Apalachee High School shooting suspect, Colt Gray, is pressing for a venue change for his upcoming trial. Colin Gray, who is charged with 29 counts, including second-degree murder for allegedly giving his son access to the firearm used in the tragedy, has cited excessive media exposure as a reason for the request. According to a FOX 5 Atlanta report, the motion filed in Barrow County Superior Court proclaims that the case's extensive publicity has "severely prejudiced prospective jurors against the defendant."
Colin Gray's legal team claims the trial cannot be fair if held in Barrow County due to the intense emotions stirred up by the well-known victims. Notably, those killed in the September 4, 2024 shooting included two beloved educators and two 14-year-old students. Their identities were disclosed by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation: students Christian Angulo, Mason Schermerhorn, and teachers Cristina Irimie, and Richard Aspinwall. As the 11Alive news covered, this link between the community and the victims is a critical factor in the venue change request.
Aside from second-degree murder, Colin Gray is also facing charges of second-degree cruelty to children. The counsel for the defense is pushing for a hearing regarding the venue change, emphasizing the need for a jury untainted by local biases. The hearing is expected to take place on April 17 at 1:30 p.m., as indicated by the motion.
Meanwhile, Colt Gray, to be tried as an adult, is confronting 55 charges, including felony and malice murder indictments. He was previously indicted by a grand jury over the incident, which not only claimed four lives but also left others injured. The request to to absolutely ensure Colin Gray's right to a fair trial was emphasized in the venue change motion filed last Sunday. The prosecutors' response to this motion is still pending, and it remains uncertain if Colin Gray will make a personal appearance at the hearing.
