Arlington gears up to celebrate the joys of childhood and the love for reading as it observes Día de los Niños on April 30. The city's library system has unveiled a slate of activities aimed at enticing young minds into the vivid world of literature. At the heart of the celebration, which spans all library branches, is a commitment to foster literacy and cultural understanding.
In a lineup replete with interactive and engaging programs, families have the chance to drop by any branch for a dive into the history of Día de los Niños and libraries, informed by the Arlington Public Library. Adding to the allure are free books available for the taking and Take and Make Craft Kits, albeit as supplies last, ensuring that the festivities spill from the library confines to creative spaces at home.
At the Downtown Library, 10 a.m. marks the beginning of "Baby Time Play," an event where caregivers, alongside their pre-walking babies, can indulge in baby-safe play. As reported by the Arlington Public Library, it's a special Día de los Niños program designed to stimulate the youngest of participants. And for those seeking to tailor a personal reading adventure, the "Make Your Own Book" workshop at the Southeast branch invites children under 12 to decorate and fill their books with personal stories at 2 p.m.
The celebration also extends to the whimsical with "Book Character Mini Golf" at the Southwest Library at 4 p.m., transforming the place into a miniaturized literary wonderland with book-themed holes. Characters from beloved children's books will make an appearance, with the event catered specifically for the 3-8-year-old crowd. A visit across the various branches will reveal Take and Make Craft Kits, each themed uniquely from dragons and gardens to city friends and pirates, as families explore a myriad of literary worlds.
In an evening event not to be missed, esteemed Mexican-American author Alicia Salazar will grace the East Library and Recreation Center at 6 p.m. Author of the popular "Camila series" and books exploring cultural themes, Alicia's appearance promises to offer insightful discourse into her creative process. According to a statement from the Arlington Public Library, there will be a moderated Q&A, giving fans a chance to delve into the life and work of an author who has captivated the imaginations of children nationwide.
