Residents and businesses in Athens-Clarke County will need to adjust their schedules for Earth Day, as certain services and facilities will experience changes on Tuesday. Athens-Clarke County Government has announced closures and altered hours for various departments in observance of the holiday.
Animal Services will be impacted, with the Adoption Center closing on Earth Day, Tuesday, cited Athens-Clarke County Government. But for those with urgent needs, emergency on-call services, such as responding to animal bites or dealing with seriously sick or injured animals, remain accessible by calling 911. Regular field services and Adoption Center hours will resume on Wednesday.
The Leisure Services Department sees its facilities shutting down on Tuesday, too, with parks being the exception, staying open under regular hours. Once Earth Day has passed, it's back to business as usual on the following day. Those interested can get more details directly from the Leisure Services Department.
Changes to waste collection schedules are also worth noting for residents and local enterprises. Residential and commercial garbage and recycling pickups outside of the Downtown district won't take place on Earth Day. Instead, Athens-Clarke County Government has shuffled pickups around, with Monday's collections moving to April 21 and Tuesday's collections postponed to April 23. The rhythm continues as Wednesday's collections shift to Thursday, April 24 and Thursday and Friday's collections converge next Friday. However, those residing and operating within the Downtown district will experience no change in service. The Landfill and the CHaRM facility will both close on Tuesday, while the Solid Waste offices and the Materials Recycling Facility stick to their standard schedules, barring Tuesday's exception.
Lastly, all administrative offices and facilities, including City Hall, will take a break on Earth Day but will promptly resume regular operations on Wednesday, according to Athens-Clarke County Government. Transit services, however, remain unaffected, continuing their usual hours during the holiday. For updates or additional information on any of these service changes, Athens-Clarke County residents are encouraged to get in touch with the respective departments using the contact information they have provided.
